Mental Toughness: Be Resilient

Risley Tang

Hey welcome to the Salty Spitoon, how tough are ya? No seriously, how tough are you?

Training no matter if you’re in it for sports performance, rehab, or longevity has its ups and down. Your ability to ride the highs and fight through the lows will determine your toughness and how long you’ll last in your activity.

No one likes a quitter, especially the expectation we have for ourselves. So how do we build this toughness?

It’s not necessarily about pushing through the pain or beating yourself up to do better, that’s how people burn out and never do the activity again. It’s about being real with yourself. Start by understanding the process and learn how it applies to your experience, either ask someone you trust or do research on how to overcome this challenge that you’re currently facing.

If you want to truly become good at something, my best advice is to always try to be patient and not act on emotions or impulses. The best way to fight the lows of your activity is time, be patient, and start developing a plan to get out of there now. You will eventually see the light at the end of the tunnel.

This is all part of maturing in your activity, the more you do it the more you’ll realize you’ll have to fight for every little improvement, not with just hard work but calculated hard work.

Hope this brings a new perspective in you becoming tougher today. Toughness is not shown through acts but instead by how you are mentally capable of handling things.

As always I’m here to chat whenever! See you guys next week.
