Coach Risley here, I feel you. You hate accessories or are just too tired to do them after your primary strength training. This is what I’ve learned through coaching and through the years of training I've done.
Not only do accessories help you get stronger without adding too much unnecessary fatigue aka increase your muscle mass, but they also help you stay safe by working on potential weaknesses you may have so you can lift as healthy as possible.
Why is this important? Your ability to stay healthy during training is everything when speaking of your personal growth and beating your competitors during your training timeline. This is why being strong everywhere matters.
Now to address the two most common concerns as to why people don’t do their accessories. The first concern is the inability to enjoy the movements, and the second is not having the mental capacity to complete them. aka, you’re tired.
The enjoyment of accessories goes as follows. Think about what exercises you can tolerate progressing for the next six months, if you can visualize this then add it to the program. Next, try to develop a deeper connection with your muscles, better connection will transfer into bigger muscles and bigger muscles then transfer into a stronger you which equals a happy you. (how to enjoy bodybuilding 101).
If you find yourself not having the mental capacity to do your accessories because you’re too tired then you have 2 solid solutions from me. Either see if you can do an accessory session by itself and bang it out in 30 minutes then do your strength movements later. Or if you do not have that privilege then potentially talk to your coach to reduce the intensity of your main movements so you can still have the capacity to finish everything you need to.
As always I am here to chat! Hope this article will help you find a new light to doing accessory work. And remember to...
